We fully appreciated the lovely long, mild fall and now are settling into the darker, cozy months of winter, wondering when the first snowstorm will arrive!? The bird feeders have been filled and are just beginning to be visited more actively in our Secret Garden.
I put up twinkle lights around our windows on the first day of December, to help brighten these grey mornings. The children are happy to snip off a loop on their Solstice chains, at the end of each day, counting down the days ‘til the shortest day and longest night of the year.
Meanwhile, the short i sound as in pin, and the letter Cc have been introduced, as well as the high frequency word “go”. We’ve all been having fun with our new song “Go,Go,Go to Bed”! Kindergartners have been practicing reading “City Sounds” and “Farm Sounds”. Our class book shelves are now filled with a wonderful assortment of books about feelings and families. We had an amazing discussion about what we can do if we are, or an adult is, feeling angry. Ask your child!
In Math we have started a chapter on size and position. We read the poem about the old lady who lived in a shoe, then estimated and counted how many unifix cubes would fit in our own shoes.
Now that boot season is here, you are encouraged to keep an extra pair of shoes or slippers here in cubbies, so your child won’t have to remember to bring them back and forth to school. Please label all snow clothes and we’ll do our best to keep track of them!
Your child might have mentioned that we had a practice “Lock Down” in school on Tuesday. We practiced going quickly to our “Safe Place”, sitting down and staying quiet. We kept it low key, but they seemed to understand it was important to be serious, and took it in stride.
I have jury duty next Tuesday; Mrs. Sweet will be subbing for me.
I hope you all have a relaxing weekend.Stay warm and well. LBC
