Jan. 2-12, 2018

Dear Families,

I hope you all enjoyed the holidays with family and friends, and a more relaxed pace over the vacation. Thank goodness it is finally warming up! The children have been wild and restless with cabin fever, stuck inside throughout this long bitter cold stretch. The delayed opening morning, when we only had Kindergartners, there were some   funny, interesting comments: “It’s quiet and we get some time to think!” “Great! No smooshies!” (more room in circle).

We’ve been discussing New Year’s Resolutions and the children drew and wrote about what they hope to do more of or get better at in 2018. Several children hope to help with snow plowing. Taylor hopes to learn to do cartwheels, and Emma hopes to play more with her grand-  parents. We’ve all been trying to practice random acts of kindness. :)

In Math. Kindergartners have been focusing on recognizing and describing solid and flat shapes - learning about faces, corners, edges, straight sides or curved outlines when talking about circles/cylinders/spheres, triangles/pyramids, cones, squares/cubes, rectangles, and hexagons. The children are having a lot of fun exploring and discovering the properties of our soft solid shapes.

We all enjoyed the Big Book “My Garden”, adding creative color and imagination to this white winter. Many children wrote about the things they’d like to plant and grow: jelly beans, rainbow flowers…

On Friday we are hoping the weather will cooperate so the Kindergartners will be able to participate in their first ski/swim day! I’m looking forward to some special, more individualized time with the PreK’s, and then will join the Social Studies curriculum review team.

Sadly Miss Jane has been out all week taking care of her ailing mother. There has not always been a sub available to help us in the mornings when we have 18 children. Your support in labeling snow clothes and encouraging your child to dress as quickly and independently as possible would help greatly! Thanks.

I hope you all have a relaxing, fun long winter weekend!  Ms.C.
