April 23 - 27, 2018
April vacation seems to have done us all a world of good, and the approaching warm weather of spring has helped to brighten everyone’s spirits too. The children have returned well rested and cheerful, glad to be back with their school buddies again, many throwing their arms around me when they see me first thing in the morning :)
In honor of Earth Day Every Day we have been talking about how we can help take care of our world. The PreK’s did a quick litter pick up on the playground, while I introduced the long a sound (as in “cake”) to the K’s. Our question of the week has been “How can you help out at home?” generating lots of good shares, and several children mentioned helping with recycling. We read “Peter’s Chair” and talked about getting bigger and taking on more responsibilities.
New high frequency words for K’s are: want, what, help, too. Please ask your Kindergartner to read the little book “I want to help” at home. Introducing the long vowels, once a first grade skill, has confused many who were just getting more sure of the short vowel sounds. The sooner we get back to a more play based K. the better!?
In Math we have been learning about measurement and capacities, experimenting with scales and a variety of containers. We are hoping to spend more time out in our Secret Garden once it dries up a bit. Meanwhile, we are so relieved to be done with snow pants etc.
Exciting news: we now have 7 eggs in our incubator!! This Friday we are looking forward to seeing Valerie Newton’s ballet, and in the afternoon the Kindergartners will be able to attend the Gr.3-4 play.
If you know of a new/incoming Kindergartner, please remind them to call the school to set up an appointment for registration on Wed. May 2. There will be an Open House for new/incoming PreK’s that evening from 5-6 p.m. It’s wonderful to see our school filling up with new young families!
Have a lovely Springy weekend. Ms. Linda B. Coolidge
