Dear Families,            NEEDS: Bags of hay & leaves for our Compost!! :)

April vacation seems to have done us all a world of good, and the approaching warm weather of spring has helped to brighten everyone’s spirits too. The children have returned well rested, mostly cheerful (if loud!?) and glad to be back with their school buddies again. You’ve also probably heard Charlotte Gassett has joined our Kindergarten family :)

In honor of Earth Day Every Day we have been talking about how we can help take care of our world. We’ve read  “The Lorax” and “Just a Dream” which sparked some great conversations about what we can do to make a difference. Our compost tumbler is underway and our worm factory too. Donations of bags of leaves and hay are needed!

The long a sound (as in “cake”) was introduced, along with that silent/magic e at the end of a word making the vowel say its own name.  Introducing the long vowels, once a first grade skill, has confused some who were just getting more sure of the short vowel sounds. Our new high frequency words are: want, what, help, too. Please ask your Kindergartner to read the little book “I want to help” at home.

In Math we have been telling subtraction stories and learning that “take away”, “minus” and “subtract” all mean the same thing.

When we got back from April vacation we were delighted to find our Secret Garden had been lovingly tended, and lots of green sprouts are popping up! We have enjoyed several afternoon snacks out there and are hoping to spend more time out in the garden once it dries up a bit. Meanwhile, we are so relieved to be done with snow pants etc.

Exciting news: we now have 7 eggs in our incubator!! We are keeping our fingers crossed for a good hatch @ May 13. Meanwhile, our little fish fry/fingerlings are growing rapidly!

This Friday we are looking forward to seeing Valerie Newton’s ballet, including several of our classmates. We will also do some more planting in our Secret Garden.

Here’s hoping the weekend will be warm and springy.  Ms. Coolidge
